One of the reasons I love trail running (as opposed to running on streets and sidewalks) is that I can run without holding a leash. My dog Roxy comes with me on just about every run. If we’re road running, she has to stay leashed the whole time. But when we go out onto the trails, I can let her go and we run at our own paces. We both enjoy this more.

The other major reason I love trail running here in Iron County is that I get to spend time in this beautiful area. Yes, some of the trails I run go through some areas where inconsiderate jerks have dumped stuff. That makes me both angry and sad. But the more remote trails—the ones I prefer—are spectacular.

Especially at sunset. Even while running, I can’t help stopping to snap photos.
